This is a summary of my discussions with you and Dr. Pierce and should be presented as a formal proposal to the Editorial Board at our meeting in January. Basic Concept A committee would be formed to develop a number of questions (probably 8-10) for each issue of the AIH. The questions would be of a "continuing education" or "self-assessment" nature. The questions and answers would be taken from recent articles or published literature in journals and publications generally available to practicing industrial hygienist. The intent would be to make hygienist aware of current literature and encourage the reading of allied journals or publications. Committee Composition Tom Pierce has agreed to form and head the initial committee. The committee would communicate with the Editorial Board through a Board Coordinator. Committee Expenses It is anticipated that the committee will operate by phone and mail. However, where necessary, the Board should authorize reasonable administrative costs for preparation of the column. Question Preparation/Source There will be a conscious effort to avoid "ABIH type" questions. The questions will typically be drawn from recent publications as opposed to classic textbook type sources. Journals such as AIHJ and JQM would be used as well as nontraditional journals, such as Plant Engineering or Sound and Vibration, which often contain practical control type articles and are usually obtainable by hygienist from other sources in the company. We should reserve one page for the first column, if the concept is approved. If a topical edition (i.e., asbestos) is published a list of questions specific to the topic could be developed for that issue. Please let me know if further action is needed before the Atlanta meeting. Feel free to distribute this memo to the Board for review prior to the meeting. Tom is actively working on committee formation and I would have more details in January. Sincerely, Thomas G. Grumbles ajo/8 cc Bob Lee Tom Pierce, Ph.D. vvv 000C17S65
