Kurtz Occupational Safety and Health Administration 1015 Jackson Keller Road San Antonio, Texas 78213 Dear Mr. Kurtz, At Mr. Ray Skinner's (OSHA, Corpus Christi) request, and in accordance with my December 13, 1974 letter to you, the following is a description of the procedure used to conclude the use of asbestos containing materials and to clean up the area (54E quonset bldg.) where Johns-Manvilie 7M-90 and mo lasses were previously mixed: 1. On November 22, during the evening shift, a worker used a Dustfoe respirator and disposable coveralls. 2. Removed and dismantled the wooden Johns-Manvilie 7M-90 mixing box. 3. Removed metal mixing box. 4. The above mix boxes were discarded in the special Marinite disposal Dempster bucket. 5. The remaining four sacks of Johns-Manvilie 7M-90 were dis carded into the special Marinite disposal bucket. (The one open sack was put into a plastic bag and similarly disposed.) 6. The walls and floor were thoroughly cleaned and washed down. 7. The clean-up dirt and trash were deposited in plastic bags. 8. All plastic bags were sealed with tape, narked and deposited in the special Marinite disposal bucket. 9. The above debris was dumped into the special waste pit for asbestos containing materials. 10. On Saturday, November 23, 1974, a crew removed and similarily disposed the remaining stores Johns-Manvilie 7M-90 inventory, (some 30 to 40 bags) ^pC 004639 11 The asbestos containing waste in the special asbestos area in Alcoa's solid waste disposal site was promptly covered with land fill. 12. The use of Johns-Manville 711-90 was officially discontinued November 25, 1974. A substitute asbestos free material is currently being used. If we can be of further assistance please advise.
