Bell Solutia technicians found polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) outside Anniston High School on Tuesday, barely a week after crews spent days removing traces of the suspected carcinogen inside and outside the school. Principal Joan Frazier said she was officially informed of the discovery on Wednesday. The Star learned of the contamination from Solutia on Thursday. Frazier said Solutia officials discovered PCBs in soil on about a quarter-acre swath south of the high school, "an area that isn't trafficked by staff or students." Solutia officials will rope off the area while it removes contaminated dirt. Spokeswoman Gayle Macolly said the cleanup should be completed within two weeks. PCBs produced in west Anniston by Monsanto Co. from 1929 to 1971 escaped the plant and polluted many areas of the city. Solutia, which spun off from Monsanto, is nearing the end of a citywide cleanup of PCBs contamination. Before school started last Thursday, officials wiped down walls, floors, desks and bookshelves after PCBs were found in dust inside the school. Workers also laid fresh sod on the school grounds after traces of PCBs were found in dirt. "If there's any silver lining," Frazier said, "it's that this should not be at all disruptive (to academics.) But the fact remains, it's there and it needs to be gotten out of there."
