Through the work of our global partners, ASTM standards have been cited nearly 8,000 times in laws and regulations around the world. What began with the railroad industry at the height of the industrial age has evolved into important activity across many industry sectors, including aviation, consumer products, and advanced manufacturing. Expansive PFAS Efforts within ASTM Committees ASTM International has long maintained standards to address environmental measure and exposure to PFAS. At least ten ASTM committees are impacted by PFAS, and many have already developed standards. The following is not comprehensive. Since there are no standard methods for measuring PFAS in consumer products, F15.81 is working to fill the void. After first convening in June 2022, F15.81 has quickly grown to over 325 technical experts that meet virtually on a regular basis to develop a standard guide. With more than 12,000 PFAS compounds in commerce, the standards developed by the subcommittee will focus on those that are of greatest pertinence to human and environmental health. Active F15.81 Work Item WK83978, New Guide for Selecting Analytical Methods to Evaluate PFAS in Consumer and Related Products This proposed guide discusses the selection, application, interpretation, and limitations of available preparatory and analytical methods and techniques to identify and determine PFAS in different types of products and material media. However, the guide does not attempt to establish any criteria for acceptable limits.
