Each of the Spray-O-Lyte inquiries were reviewed and discussed, resulting in an agreed format response to answer these, as well as future inquiries. Replies will be handled by J, Volk and will be of a low profile nature and not an elaborative nature. We further agreed that we would not supply a Material Safety Data Sheet (M.S.D.S.) on the discontinued product Spray-O-Lyte, nor would we include the percentage of composition of asbestos in any of our replies. R. J. Freidheim is sending a notice to all district managers, plant managers and directors within the Charlotte office, ad vising them to direct all product inquiries to the attention of W. S. Eikenberry, who will forward them to J. Volk at Research. This same notice is to alert our switchboard personnel to direct product inquiries to W. S. Eikenberry. We will have to wait and see if our answers satisfy the individuals making inquiries. If they do not, and more specific information is requested, most assuredly J. National Gypsum Company wishes to alert its customers to the new Federal Regulations which apply to the handling of Bsbestoscontaining materials. Pursuant to the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), "Standards for Exposure to Asbestos Dust" were published in the Federal Register on June 7, and became effective July 7> 1972. On shipments of certain cement asbestos products we will subsequently include a "Caution Notice", a copy of which is enclosed. The asbestos fibers in all Gold Bond cement asbestos products have been modified by a bonding agent, Portland Cement. However, you should be aware that certain methods of cutting, sanding, etc. of cement asbestos products may produce asbestos dust in excess of the levels prescribed by the Standards and certain safety precautions should be taken. Prolonged breathing of asbestos dust may be harmful, particularly to cigarette smokers. Once cement asbestos products are installed, and under normal use, they present no known health risk to the user or the general public. Testing laboratories such as those on the attached partial list, can help you determine whether your operation meets the requirements of OSHA (time-weighted average concentrations of asbestos fibers longer than 5 micrometers are not to exceed $ fibers per cubic centimeter of air, permitted until July 1, 1976--after this date only 2 fibers will be permitted. The standard also establishes a ceiling of 10 fibers-, not to be exceeded at any time.) _ .
