Gardner* At a meeting yesterday attended by certain bratco lining manuTacturor.a, Ur. Simpson and I were able to preaent to a fairly large group of interested corporations the proposal that one of your dusting chambers be engaged for further experi mentation with asbestos dust. The proposal was very well received and it appears that not less than eight, and ptrhnpo ten or more, corporations will participate in financing those further experiments along the lines dlocussed whoa we met with Dr.- Lanza and Dr. UcConnell a few days ago. Accord!ngly, you may consider tliis letter as an authorization to you to cbitiaonce the contemplated experiments with asbestos dust for the purpose of determining more definitely the causes and effects of nsbestosis. It is my understanding that, among other questions which it is anticipated theso experi ments will answer, are the following* (1) hat concentration of dust is necessary to .jrouuce the fibroslo of the lungs which is designated as _____ nshns-t.Q-S-ls-._______________ :________________ ____________________ (2) Whether exposure to asbestos' dust will produce asbestosls without the oxlstence of previous infection and whethor the X-ray changes found in advtmcod human asbestosls can be rttproducod in animals without Infection. (3). Whether tho fibrosis produced of the progressiva typo, that by asbestos is is, will the ALL0145 fibrosis increase (once it has started) after exposuro to the dust has eeasod.
