Quench Column Valve Actuators
This memo describes the operation of the automated block valves in the two quench column inlet lines and in the common quench line.
One of the Bettis operators from the quench column inlet lines should be repaired and installed on the 8" block valve in the common quench line. This operator must be modified to be operated from an air signal.
Two additional new 14" gate valves will be installed on the quench column inlet lines and will be provided with pneumatic valve actuators (PANTEX model G-14UL14), The existing 14" gate valves will be manually operated so that the column may be blocked in manually in case of valve operator failure.
These three valves can be Independently closed from manual air switches located in the control room, at the east end of Block II, and on the quench column. Control air cylinders are placed at the two control stations and motive air cylinders are placed at each of the valves so that their operation is independent of the plant air and electrical systems. These valves can only be opened from the quench column.

Since the delivery of these actuators requires at least 12 weeks, I recommend placing them on order immediately.
