The major crystalline materials seen by x-ray diffraction were chrysotile and calcite. An optical examination by polarized light microscopy and dispersion staining revealed many non-birefringent fibers (probably mineral wool) as well as birefringent fibers with the same appearance and index of refraction as chrysotile asbestos.
