Subj: Investigation of packings and gaskets for use in hydraulic systems sen'll nji ng phosphate-ester fluids; MS 066-001; Test 01Q276A
Baf:

16 Aug 1955 (b) BGSHIPS apdltr All/HS 066-001(3450) Mr 3450-6 of S Jan 1957 (e) Kllitaxy Specification MU>P-29U para. F-3a
By referanoe (a) the Station ws requested to conduct the subject investiga
tion In compliance with reference (b), this is a progress report covering tests of sheet naterials and practical tests of hydraulic-re*
packings.
The physical properties of the sheet naterials were detemined initially and after lanereion for one week in Cellulube 220 phosphate-ester hydraulic fluid
at 1$8*F. The ran packings were subjected to simulated-service test in the Station's telmotor-ra* packing-test apparatus. This test was conducted as described in reference (c), except that the fluid temperature was 150*F. The results ere tabulated below.

Swelled and caused eoBsessive friction
The reedlts dwv that the packings with conventional synttaetio-rubber Under* are not resistant to Cellulube 220. With few exceptions, these Materials swelled excessively, softened and lost strength. Only the bntyl or vyrsa naterlals are resistant to Cellulube 220. The latter Materials also were found to have alaost the sane resistance to a Mixture of Cellulube 220 with by volume of petroleum base fluid such as might result from incomplete drainage of the system during conversion to the phosphate-ester fluid*
Result* of the simulated-service test show that conical or Y-type hydraulic puking* with neoprene binder are unsuitable for use with the phosphateeater fluid* Only the conical packing with butyl Under, Garlook 7514, is indicated to bo suitable by its 950 hours of satisfactory performance to
The investigation will continue with tests of practical flange-joint tests of gasket materials*
