According to Cuenicr it. il, (1967), 09T related wortallty twit te

This c* be attributed
to toe fact mat mt ef toe GOT in toe egg trill remln with toe trf 1s
which ire tftcric^ during toe sriena tu|t< like OPT, PCI's are
dlirlNtri hydrocarborns and are very Hpid soluble.
Because toe PCI levels faund In toe fry ana era were high and fry
died fa toe swin-up stage, toe presence of PCI's are considered to be
toe likely cause of toe northern pike fry aortal1 ties experienced at toe Volf Lake Hattoery.
The source ef PCI's did not appear to be la toe hatchery water. The basic water supply was tested and found to be free ef chlorinated hydro* carbons. Pesticides and PCI's were found, however, In the water saoptes froa toe third rearing trough. These nay have originated frm toe fry which lost toes to toe water, particularly after they started dying. Since PCI's were not found in toe water supply entering the troughs, toe PCI's in toe eggs and fry probably originated with the adult fish.
To test this hypothesis, adults were collected frtm Lake Hacatewa near Holland. Six adults ranging in slat froa 1M to 34.7 inches were collected on two separate collection attempts, Hay 22 and 29, 1974.
The foUcwing table lists the lengths and ages of these northern pike with toe concentrations (ppn) of too PCS residues found to toe flesh.

As you will note, total PCI appeared to Increase with the age and slat of pike. This is probably significant in light of toe tendency of rat fish culturists to select toe largest fenales for spawn taking.
Past (1972) PCI data ef toe Michigan Water Resources Comission (MIC) on fisn collected fron the Black River aaove lake Hacatewa also corrobo rates toe relatively high PCI concentrations noted in 1974. Aa 11-inch scellBOuth bass contained 4.35 ppa PCI in a portion of edible flesh* This Is well above what toe fttRC considers background levels.
The discovery of relatively high PCI concentrations 1* brood stock
collected free Lake Hacatewa and asseciatatd fry oartalltles indicates
that alternative brood stock collection sites should bo explored for
1975.

Dm Michigan Depertuent of Natural Resources Fisheries Oivlsloo collects froai 12 to 14 Million northern pike eggs each year fro* wild soirees for Its northern pike stocking progrut. Pike In spurning condition ere
trapped In southwestern Michigan strews and transported to the Volf Uk* Hatchery near Ulaxazoo for spawxirg. Survival of the fertllfxed oggs to svi*-u? averages about 402, Swio-up fry are then stocked In extensive rearing sarshes adjacent to lakes or in cheefcalty reclafced waters.
Mortality
*
Ry April 10, 1974 nore than 1 Million fry had died at Wolf take and the Mortalities were brought to the attention of the O.N.ft.'s Toxic Materials aod Bioassay Croup. Nearly all fry were dying about 6 days after hatch ing at the sw<M-vp stage.
The inspiration of new PYC pipe at tke hatchery was first suspected as
a source of pfsthalates or othor vinyl chloride cocpaunds which say have
caused the Mortality. The death of fry at s*1*.up is characteristic of
Mortalities caused by chiurinated hydrocarbon) compounds and other lipid
soluble toxicants. Water and fry samples were taken to chock this
possibility, while the plueblng at Wolf Lake was converted back to Iron
pipe on April 11, 1574.
-
Phthalate leaching fran the new PYC pipe was ruled out as a cause of the
Mortality after water sanples taken during plastic pipe use were analysed, and Pike fry reared with Iron piping continued to die six days after hatching on April 18th.
Thirty-nine ppb phthalate were found In the water sacplo taken when PYC pipe was In use. Although soMwhat elevated, the available 56 hour LCSO's for phthalatcs rang* from 0.7 to 6.S ppa, much higher than the
observed level. An teportant consideration is that very hard PYC pipe was used which has less pnualate than softer plastics, and after adequate flushing little or no phthalate should leach frow the pipe.
Analysis of.the fry and eggs did indicate, however, that PCS levels were sufficient to cause fry Mortalities. Total PCS levels In the fry were
1.6o ppm of Arochlor 1254 and 1.41 ppm of Arochtor 1248 in one sacple
and 0.44 ppa as 1254 and 1.21 ppa as 1248 in tne other. The eggs contained
1.58 ppm as 1254 and 1.80 pp* as 1248. According to Jensen et.sl. 0770), when PC8 residues in groups of seicon eggs ranged froo 0.4 to~lTT ppa on a whale weight basis, aortalities ranged froa 16 to 100 percent. Jensen et.aU (1970) suggested that 0.5 ppm PCS in whole salxon eggs aay be near the threshold for Mortality. This value May approxicato the threshold lovel for othor species, such as the northern pike.
