UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION TECHNICAL CENTER SOUTH CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA MEMORANDUM November 26, 1984 PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT UC-2705 TO: J. W. Karri Sistersvllle Plant COPY: B. H. Avashia, M.D J. W. Barna C. P. Maxwell R. L. Noble D. R. Paugh M. A. Patel H. H. Price R. G. Rowe, M.D. K. E. W111 lams FROM: M. F. Stowers/R. E SUBJECT: Asbestos Monitoring at Slstersvllle Plant Attached are the results of asbestos exposure monitoring conducted on May 23, 1984 while construction employees stripped approximately 1600 ft.2 of Insulation from a boiler at the Powerhouse. Sampling was done during both morning and afternoon work sessions. A heavy rain fell during the first hour of morning sampling (9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.). During the second hour the rain gradually tapered off unltl It finally stopped and the sun came out at the end of the morning work period (11:30 a.m.). The weather continued to be warm and sunny throughout the afternoon work session which was begun following the lunch break. All samples were found to contain levels of asbestos fibers below the present permissible exposure limit of 2.0 fibers per c.c. of air. It may be noticed that fiber concentrations In the afternoon samples are considerably higher than In the morning samples. This Is undoubtedly due to the heavy rain experienced during the morning work session. During the afternoon session, portable sprayers weTe used to wet the Insulation. All employees were protected by the use of respirators, gloves, and coveralls during both work sessions. Although all samples were below the present permissible exposure Limit (two flbers/c.c.), it is possible that a new 0SHA standard may be Issued which would reduce the permissible exposure limit to 0.2 or 0.5 fibers per c.c. of air. If this were the case, then all but one of the afternoon samples would be In excess of permissible exposure. It would be advisable to attempt reduction of exposure as much as possible in anticipation of the new standard.
