Firestone uses a chemical blend of n-
pentane and iso-pentane as a blowing agent to produce polyisocyanurate thermal
insulation. The facility produces the insulation in a 350,000 square foot building where
the majority of the operation focuses on storing and distributing a large quantity of the
product. Staff offload product into trucks that deliver the final product directly to
contractors to use during commercial building roof installation. The Florence facility
utilizes a rail spur next to their production building to receive pentane from rail cars and
offloads it into one, 45,000 gallon storage tank. Pentane from the outdoor storage tank is
pumped through piping into the indoor, inline blending unit on the foam production line.

After blending with other chemicals, the foam components are poured onto a paper lining, cured, and laminated to the desired thickness. The resulting foam is trimmed and cut into specific dimensions to create the final insulation product. Any offgas created throughout the process is collected and burned in an outdoor, thermal oxidizer.
