FISCAL 1959 TRADE SALES PRODUCTION
Page 2 April 5, 1960
In line wlch prior years' reports and In order to analyze fiscal 1959 production, all Y-Llne Trade Sales products have been classified as either exterior or Interior finishes. For the purposes of this report, the predominant use of a product which could be classified either exterior or Interior has been used to determine Its classification.
Within the category of exterior or Interior finish, we have further classified all products as either oil paints, emulsion paints, synthetic rubber base paint, varnish and varnlBh stains, stains or miscellaneous products. This latter clas sification In Section III will enable us to more closely follow the Increase and/or decrease experienced by various paint products.

EXTERIOR FINISHES
The steady upward trend in the production of exterior finishes 1955 through 1958 was halted with a decrease in production of 29,272 gallons In 1959. The fact remains however, that over the five-year period 1955 through 1959 a cumulative average yearly growth of 5.3% has been experienced. This percentage growth substantially exceeds that experienced by Interior finishes.
The above noted over-all decline in fiscal 1959 production of 29,272 gallons Is largely accounted for by a decrease In production of 245,000 gallons of oil house paint, 7,000 gallons of varnish and varnish stain, 6,000 gallons of miscellaneous products offset partially by an Increase of 153,000 gallons In emulsion paint and 75,000 gallons of other oil paint.
The decrease in the production of 245,000 gallons of oil house paint includes an 84.000 gallon decrease in the production of Endurance House'Palnt, 26,000 gallon decrease in Imperial White and 130,000 gallon decrease In House Paint other than Y-Llne. The decrease in gallonage of House Paint other than Y-Llne was actually 206.000 gallons. However, we offset the production of 76,000 gallons of Craftsman White House Paint against it as this Item which formerly would have been Included in the production of House Paint other than Y-Llne was produced under a Y-Llne number.
The over-all-Increase of 153,000 gallons in the- productlon_of emulslon finishes ls the net result of the production of 204,000 gallons of our new Spred House Paint and a decrease of 51,000 gallons in the production of Spred Glide-On. \
The Increase in the production of 75,000 gallons of other oil paint is' composed of an Increase of 75,000 gallons in Speed Enamel, the addition of 24,000 gallons of Ripolln Yachting Finishes and compensating decline in other oil finishes.
In summary, the decline in over-all exterior finish production, the decline in oil house paint finishes and the introduction of Spred House Paint appear to be the major Items of interest.

FISCAL 1059 TRADE SALES PRODUCTION
Page 3 April 5, 1960
INTERIOR FINIS Ill'S
Fiscal 1959 occasioned an increase in the production of interior finishes approxi mating 448,000 gallons. Substantial increases over fiscal 1958 figures were experienced by oil paint - up 163,000 gallons, emulsion finishes - up 317,000 gallons, stain - up 16,000 gallons and miscellaneous finishes - up 31,000 gallons. These gains were partially offset by decreases in the production of varnish and varnish stains - down 54,000 gallons and synthetic rubber base paints - down 25,000 gallons.
An increase in the production of Spred Lustre of 182,000 gallons was the most promi nent factor in oil paint production during fiscal 1959. The production of 1,105,207 gallons established a new record and exceeded by 100,000 gallons the previous high registered in 1957.
The increase in emulsion gallonage is mainly accounted for by an increase in Spred Satin of 162,000 gallons, the introduction of Spred Tred with 219,000 gallons pro duced and a decrease of 57,000 gallons in the production of Spred Suede Craftsman.
The items of major interest appear to be the growth of both oil and emulsion finishes and the new record high production of Spred Lustre.
GENERAL COMMENTS
For the convenience of all concerned we have prepared Section V, which sets forth the production by item, by plant and total for all plants. The Headquarters Stand ardization Committee will utilize this information in conjunction with our respec tive plant personnel in a thorough review of Trade Sales production to determine where consolidation is feasible and desirable.
It is rec'ommended that each Regional Director and his staff thoroughly review and study their twelve-month production figures by product to determine if items are being made in the largest batch sizes in line with requirements. If not, batch sizes should be increased within reasonable inventory stocking requirements. .
Certain discontinued Y-Line items continue to be produced by certain of our plants. vSeventy-six discontinued items were produced during the twelve-month period and in
the majority of cases the gallonage involved by product was minor. Production has been shown by plant in order that Regional Management can review the figures on discontinued items and take corrective .action to eliminate such production, where possible. Discontinued items are not going to provide growth volume to our Company.
This letter of comment is not intended to provide a complete, thorough and compre hensive review of the detail appearing in the "Fiscal 1959 Trade Sales Production" report. Each person receiving a copy of the report should thoroughly review and study the Information contained therein. As indicated in the past two yearly letters of comment, the data presented in the report can be the foundation for:
(a) Action to strengthen present products and lines which will form the foundation for future and continued growth.
(b) Action to discontinue items whose volume does not warrant continu ation as an active Trade Sales item.
(c) Action to consolidate certain production in one or more plants.
(d) Increasing batch size.
GLD35280
FISCAL 1959 TRADE SALES PRODUCTION
Page 4 April 5, 1960
(e) Action to discontinue production of items discontinued from the Trade Sales line.
Positive action remains a must if our sales and production efforts are to be devoted to Y-Line Trade Sales products which will provide volume, low cost, and maximum profit, all essential to our future growth.
