I found the plant to be in very good shape and I am confident that an OSHA inspector would find very little to com plain about. The last OSHA inspection was conducted in June, 1973 and addressed itself primarily to airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers, respiratory pro tection, special protective clothing and a personal monitoring program for employees. Asbestos fibers are no longer used in the manufacture of joint system compounds and the annual pulmonary function tests. Inspections, etc. relating to asbestos exposure have been discontinued with the last tests completed on February 7, 197b. Annual audiometric tests for employees are given with the most recent tests completed on December 17, 1980. The operation have experienced only one disabling injury since August 2, 1977; a hernia sustained by employee John Sowlnski on August 16, 1980. Housekeeping in the manufacturing and ware house areas was judged to be excellent. There is need for improvement in the plant laboratory which may be caused by space limitations. Notices of Compliance with OSHA, self-insured workers' compensation and N.Y. state disability benefits are properly posted. A weekly fire prevention inspec tion is conducted by Mr. John Mazza with records of inspection properly distributed and filed. Lift truck drivers have not been issued a G-P Operator's Identification Card which certifies qualification to operate specified vehicles and/or equipment. A supply is enclosed herewith for your use. One or two portable ladders that were not in use were observed to be improperly stored. I suggest a safe hori zontal storage arrangement be provided and used. Communications between the plant and the northeast regional claims office in Darien regarding N.Y. State disability and workers' compensation benefits is reported to be extremely satisfactory. In summary, you and your people are to be congratulated for the various manufacturing Innovations that have been developed and for providing a safe and healthy environment in which to work.
