This listing has served as my primary data source for study ing the work histories of the Springfield employees. There are about 120 unique department codes on this list. Subsequent to the coding of the hard copy personnel work histories we discovered an additional 29 department code numbers which were not on the Product Department History. I sent these unexplained codes to Angie Garrison in Springfield and she provided me with the department names and years for all but Dept. 210. I have also enclosed a copy of this listing (Attachment 2). As we discussed, in order to facilitate my case-control analysis of the digestive system and genito-urinary system cancers, X need to collapse the 149 department codes into a more manageable size, hopefully around 10-20 categories. Because the case-control analysis will attempt to assess whether the excess cancer mortality is related to a certain chem ical or chemical process at the plant, which may be time period depen dent, it is crucial that the recoding be done on the basis of similar exposures and/or similar work activities. For example. Attachment 1 shows that Dept. Code Numbers 30-44 were all assigned to the Sheet Dept. Could these 13 Dept. Codes comprise one recoded group? If an excess does appear to concentrate in a particular area of the plant (based on the recoding) I can then further explore this area for specific chemical exposures.
