Title: Attapulgus Clay In Competitive Joi-nt Compound*
The purpose of this investigation v* to provide unambiguous proof
for the presence or essence of attspulgus clay in competitive Joint compounds. The cemoetitive product* analysed ere listed in Table I. X-ray diffraction i* the most definitive analytical-method for identi*vjn
attapulgua clay *inc crystalline minerals are 'fingerprinted' by the position and intensity of peak* in the x-rsy diffraction spectrum.
Attapuicrus clsy peak a can not be observed in the diffraction pattern of dried joint compound because of the low clay concentration {!-**> and the masking of ateapulgite peaks by those of mica. The clay r-us* be separated from other joint compound components to obtain the best diffraction pattern.
The seoaratif-n is accomplished by dispersing the clay in a colloidal suspension, .illovjno the non-clay component* to settle cut, and the-
f lccculatirn* the Cloy colloid vith calcium hydroxide. The clav v*p dispersed when the carbonate filler was dissolved with hvdroehloric .acid. After allovinc the acid-insoluble eciids to settle out ovemi the colloitl.ii suspension was siphoned from the residue .nr* f loccul am- ` with Ca'nin,. The clay was recovered by centrilocation. An x-ray
rfiffracticn'pnttern was taken of the air-dried product.
Attapulaus clay is identified by observing characteristic peaks in ttx-ray diffraction spectra. The main attaculeite oeaks occur at lC.r, 4.5, 3.11 and 2,61 angstroms, with minor peaks at 5.42 ar.d f.-ia aryv-rr-s The latter two peaks are not subject to mica interference but are f!" observed in good quality spectra. Attapulgite identification was bar.'' ' on ebaervinn the main 10.5 anyatrom peak and one or more of the ctbo* peaks. The attapulgus clay peaks as veil as the nthsr acid ir*clublcomponents are presented in Tahie 2, Clay fractions from national
and Raco gave very pure attapulgite spectra, while Welcc shoved cnlv two attanulnite peaks because of a large ksolinite content.
The presence of asbestos fibers was checked with an ootical ricrcscr: HSOXl, and the presence of serpentine and amohibole asbestes tvoes vns ar.alyted by x-ray diffraction. The joint compound was wet-sieved _ thrown**
a 325 mesh screen to concentrate possible asfcestcS fibers for easier detection. No asbestos fibers were observed in these competitive F.t-r'.rr.
Acknowledgement:
Appreciation is expressed to Mr. Jchn Hseih for performing the rarv x-r,v scans and asbestos analyses.
