Results of the survey indicate that employee exposures are within the allowable OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 2 fibers per cubic centimeter of air. Discussion In the course of analysis of the samples, one employee, T. Nordyke #278-46-8578, was found to have a short-term exposure &t the PEL of 2 fibers/cc air, although his time-weighted average exposure was below the PEL. There are two factors which can , explain this exposure level. As the. brake .pads come off the belt, the employee inspects each one for defects. When a suf ficient quantity of pads has accumulated, he aligns all the pads by slapping them together on the work platform. The inspector then transfers the brake pads to the shipping carton. During this process the inspector dislodges loose asbestos fibers from the pad, thereby, increasing his asbestos expo sure level. The second reason is inadequate use of the . ventilated inspection area on the work platform. The inspectors have a tendency to work away from the ventilated area thereby by-passing any usefulness of the existing ventilation. In order to keep the asbestos exposure to a minimus, the use of the ventilated work areas must be mandatory at all times. In addition, inspectors should be instructed on proper handling of the brake pads so as to minimize any dislodging of loose asbestos fibers. In accordance with the memorandum of R. D.
