Thank you for participating in this morning's meeting on the new chemicals framework. I found your questions and comments very insightful and helpful to advancing our use, and further development of, the decision framework for new chemicals. I hope that you also found the discussion useful.
Implementing a new decision framework requires support throughout the office. That includes full understanding by the office's senior management team on how our decisions are adhering to the framework. To that end, for the time being Tanya Mottley and I will be the deciding officials for new chemicals cases. I expect this to be a temporary situation while we all become familiar with applying the framework to the hundreds of new chemicals decisions OPPT makes every year. This type of temporary front office hands-on involvement in decision making is not uncommon when organizations begin implementing new approaches to, or frameworks for, decision making.
To operationalize my and Tanya's ability to make new chemicals decisions without slowing down the process, we will establish an ad-hoc cross-division team that will review new chemicals cases in view of the decision framework, and make recommendations directly to Tanya and me on the determinations for each case. CCD, CESSD, and RAD will each provide a team member, and the team will be chaired by Andrea Cherepy in the Immediate Office. The team will review cases post FOCUS or standard review, consult with staff as necessary, and write up a recommendation to Tanya and me for each case. Once a determination has been made, the write-up will be posted to the CBI LAN in order to build a knowledge base for informing future evaluations and determinations.
As I said in this morning's meeting, those of you involved in the new chemicals program are doing work that is of high value in protecting human health and the environment while supporting chemical innovation. Thank you very much for your hard work and dedication to EPA's mission.
