Existing thermal insulation specifications were grouped in four classifica tions, namely: 1. "Material" specifications 2, "Test Methods for Properties of Materials" specifications 3. "Project" specifications 4, "Guide" specifications Each classification was defined and discussed in detail. Comments were invited during the presentation. Topics of discussion and classification concerned were as follows: I, Material 1. Why the contradicting information regarding permeance? Such as "Volume by weight" and/or "% by volume". Why not consistent and uniform means of stati ng all properties? 2. Why not a chart indicating effect of moisture on "C" of each insula tion material? 3. Why such broad terms as "Semi-rigid"7 II. Test Methods 1. Why cant test methods for particular physical properties be stand ardized to a greater degree? 2. Bureau of Standards method of testing for effect of moisture on efficiency of insulation was discussed. IIL "Project Specifications" 1. The necessity of uniformity in definitions of all phases in this classification of specifications. 2. It was again reported that NIMA is working on a "Glossary of Terms". IV. "Guide Specifications" 1. Why the variance in Government agency guide specifications for same materials on like applications? 3 V. Subjects of general nature discussed: 1, BRAB preparing report on physical properties and technical character istics of insulation materials* 2, Why doesn't NIMA participate on cold side? 3, Would it be advisable to incorporate Military and Federal specs. 4, Discussion of progress regarding Index to ASTM specifcations for industrial insulation, 5, It was suggested that this topic should be discussed at next meeting, "Fire k Smoke Properties of Insulation and/or Finish".
