Dear Mr. Jenkins: The report of the analytical results on came through in my absence from the Laboratory and was reported to you by wire, as you requested. My secretary was under the impression for the moment that you were a physician, and therefore assumed that you would make the obvious interpreta tion of the results. Knowing nothing of the nature of this case or of the ijroblem with which you are presented, it is not clear that any additional - comment is required. However, in view of the question in your wire of March 7# I think I should point out to you that in meuico-legal cases it is advisable to have more than one result in order to substantiate a factual position. In general, we like to have samples of blood as well as samples of urine, since there is then no question as to the lead absorption of the individual. In order to make clear what I mean, let me say that a single result might be regarded for medico-legal purposes as accidental. Moreover*, low lead coneentration in the urine might be said to have come about as the result of poor performance on the part of the kidney even in the presence of sizable quantities of lead. These questions may arise, and in dubious cases, they may be very troublesome. It Is for this reason that X consider It advisable always to deal with the doctor in these cases. He should always have the pertinent medical information, for then we shall be able to make the best interpretation of the results so as to do our full duty in relation to a patient or a medical colleague. As I have stressed in my conversations with you previously, the right time to obtain full information is when a question pre sents itself for the first time. It often happens that that is one*s only opportunity to get at the facts before other disturbing factors enter into the situation. Therefore, If you would like any further advice, I would suggest that you see to it that I get the proper information. I enclose herewith a bill to cover the cost of our services, including reimbursement for the cost of telegrams.
