Rolls installed as high as possible in new' installations Major changes should be made to raise the height of rolls in exist ing equipment 7 A pressure bar (instead of a safety cord) that will operate when struck with the leg or body should be encouraged 8 Separation of the rolls to avoid pinch points, in the onginal design 9 Proper placement of foot switches Such switches should be of the constant pres sure type, permanently fastened down, and located at a point from which the operator cannot reach the danger point of the windup Many of the hazards in connection with windups and letoffs are difficult to eliminate by engineering revision However, many accidents can be prevented if operators are given complete information concerning those hazards it is especially important to em phasize the danger of making safety con trols inoperative Other important pouts to stress in training operators are 1 Make certain that all safeguards are pro vided on the equipment and are in effec tive operating condition at all times Test safety controls before operation 2 Start the fabric on the shell or drum by winding it on by hand before the power is turned on Never permit anyone else to set this equipment in motion Make certain that the equipment cannot be set in motion while the fabric is being threaded, spliced, or wrapped on the roll or shell 3 No matter what happens, never reach between the roll and the stock or fabric or drums while the equipment is in mo tion 4 Make certain that bars and shells are securely locked in position before the equipment is started and while the rolls are turning 5 If wnnkle-removmg devices are not pro vided, stand away from the pinch point and use the palms of the hands fiat on the fabric surface In the reclaim-rubber industry, handling of re6ner knives presents a hazard to em ployees Use of holders m installing, re moving, and grinding these knives will help prevent cuts (Fig 26-33, on next page).
