In other words, its a "matter of inches", where the success can only be "metered" by reader acceptability. (Sorry) I support your thoughts on using what is traditional and avoiding the need for often useless conversions. The question of "limited application" is one I've battled with on J some papers I've reviewed. I believe that even if the potential audience is small, if the article is applied it should be published. Maybe it would help some of us single industry types to broaden our horizons. I'm not sure how we can "tighten the screws on what we perceive as applied", if we wanted to. This issue is one I'm uncomfortable with due to our lack of discussions or meetings of the editorial board as a group.
