Dear Dr. Winslow: With reference to the proposed a r tic le on "Protection Against Dust Hazards in Air Pressure Abrasive B lastin g", I have referred th is to two foundry Superintendents, also to a Foundry Engineer connected with one o f the large Insurance Companies and too was formerly an A ssistant General Superintendent in one o f the General E lectric Plants, and have the following comments to make combining opinions: "In view of the fa c t that a ir pressure abrasive b lastin g i s but one of the serious sources of harm fu l dust encountered in foundry operations, i t would seem that a great deal more good might be accomplished, at the present time, i f fthe proposed a r t ic le was written to cover a l l the major hazardous exposures in the foundry. The d r a ft o f the proposed a r tic le while title d as "Protection Against Dust Hazards in Air Pressure Abrasive Cleaning" actu ally covers a number of general items in the la s t paragraphs. I t i s suggested that the a r tic le be written under four sub-headings Covering exposures in shake-out operations, sand conditioning, castin gs cleaning and general miscellaneous sources. Winslow -2- Feb. 27, 1933 In reference to the actual text o f the a rtic le in hand the following points have been noted: (1) The amount o f dust in a pressure blastin g unit depends upon the amount of -sand retained on the castin gs being cleaned, the efficien ey o f the exhaust equipment and the type of abrasive being used. Whether m etallic abrasive or sand i s used in b lastin g , there w ill be harmful dust and the operation must be completely enclosed and venti lated. (2) There i s some difference o f opinion re lativ e to the rounding of ste e l g r it due to wear. Some p a rtie s maintain that the g r it becomes rounded and some retain s i t s sharpness for some time. Consequently, I think that the sentence referring to the rounding o f g r it be deleted. (3) All descriptions o f b arrels and tab les are, of course, general but such statements in regard to sand b la st table as ordin arily 6 or 7 f t . in diameter" would, undoubtedly be c ritic iz e d . The writer can see no p artic u lar reason for including such descriptive matter in the a r tic le . (4) In the paragraph headed "Automatically Fed B lasting ftooms", the use of the words "b e lt conveyors" i s questioned. Ordinarily a chain conveyor, or a monor a i l i s employed to carry castin gs through automatic cleaning units. (5) The l a s t sentence in the paragraph re la tiv e to p ositive pressure helmets might be misunderstood. Screen sh ields should be used over g la ss or composition windows to protect the same from the "fogging", or "scouring" action of flying abrasive. Some manufacturers recommend an a ir flow of 2 cu. f t . per minute, therefore i t might be well to su bstitu te a range o f supply in place o f the sp e c ific amount, 6 cu. f t . per minute. In item "b ", paragraph 7, the dusty m aterial which i s swept up should be thoroughly . wet down-before sweeping begins to prevent dust being stirre d up whioh w ill add to the contamination of the a ir unless vacuum cleaning i s a v a ila b le ."
