Sather Date September 24, 1979 Subject VCM CANISTER MASKS * The Safety Department has just completed a change-out of all obsolete VCM canisters in the plant. The canister masks are now approved for several functions other than escape as was indicated in the VCM slide and tape show earlier this year. These functions are: 1. Working in a contaminated area of less than 10 ppm VCM for up to 10 hours; 2. Escape from an area contaminated by higher concentrations of VCM to obtain a Scott Air Pak; 3. Performing leak detection operations when the Honeywell Units are indicat ing leaks between 5 and 10 ppm VCM. 4. Lab and Compound Department personnel performing their normal duties when VCM levels are less than 10 ppm VCM as measured by the Honeywell in the Lab. The Safety Department will also supply a leak detection canister gas mask for each unit to be used in conjunction with item 3 above. We will supply the. VCM canisters and some disposable disinfectant towelettes which must be used by operations during weekends. Operations personnel shall be responsible to replace the canister and clean the respirator during off shifts and weekends to keep these leak detection respirators in service. In all cases, the Safety Department must be notified whenever these units have been used in order that they be properly cleaned as required prior to returning them to service. jf . .
