SUBJECT: Storage and Care of Air/Face Masks
GEN 55 (REV.6/74)
OATE
October 11, 1979
REFERENCE NO.
JPH-367 -79 ____
During the Safety and Housekeeping Committee Meeting of August I agreed to address the problem of storing and caring for air/face masks (ref. EGZ-266-79). I would also like to include other safety related per sonal protective devices.
Air/Face Masks
Scott Air-Pacs are emergency-use devices. They are inspected monthly and immediately following use. The Industrial Health Coordinator (Mrs. C. B. Shafer) should be notified after a Scott Air-Pac is used, so that the device can be made ready for future use.
On an as-needed-basis the Industrial Health Coordinator will assist in setting up a fresh air breathing system for users. The system consists of: (1) 300 cu ft. breathing air bottle, (2) air regulator, (3) connecting hose, and (4) the air/face mask. An air /face mask should be issued to each user with his/her name on the device.
On an as-needed-basis, the Industrial Health Coordinator may issue a canister mask to individuals on the approval of the Health Chemist (Mr. E. S. Ramey) and the Supervisor responsible for the work to be done. Again, these masks are to identified by the user's name.
Storage and Care of Air/Face Masks
The program outlined above dictates that the individual user of an air/face mask maintain complete control to avoid the possibility of spreading a communicable disease. Since this is an individual, short-term problem, I suggest the Industrial Health Coordinator, the user, and his/her Super visor address this problem.
Storage and Care of Personal Protective Equipment
Since face shields, goggles, gloves, hand creams, etc, are items common to all Labs, I suggest identifying a place in each lab and/or the hallways for storage. There are suitable cabinets on the market. Under this plan an air/face mask could be included. Care of all equipment would then become a line management responsibility.
