Hillman Date : June 3, 1982 Subject: VCM CHARGE FILTER REPLACEMENT DESIGN Attached is the budget design to replace one fresh VCM charge filter in each reactor module with a backwash type filter. This design will be part of the 1983 Capital Budget. This design is part of an effort to reduce VCM overexposure to plant^'personnel. Using current stripping procedures, all of the VCM is not recovered from the charge filter packs before change out due to plugged filter ele ments. This design should reduce possible VCM overexposure in two ways: 1) by regularly "backwashing" the filter tubes of solids, less frequent filter element changes should be required, and 2) since the filter media will be a fabric layer over a perforated support tube very little VCM should be retained in the filter after it is washed out and recovered. A cost savings will result from significantly fewer filter changes and less expensive filter element cost. The recovered and remaining fresh VCM charge filters in each module will be used as a backup to the new filter. By copy of this design to John Dixon, we are requesting a budget quality estimate.
