mmmer. Warehouse contamination. Baton Bouga Depot

Findings from the recent collection and laboratory testing of airborne
asbestos fibers at Baton Rouge Depot show conclusively that permissible
exposure to airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers is being exceeded
in these warehouses* Because of these excessive concentrations, it must
be presumed .that these buildings contain a latent contamination of the
material in sufficient quantities to be injurious to the health of future
occupants, and which may also contaminate goods placed in the warehouses
before decontamination.
Recently, Warehouse 1 (Bldg. 26) containing 239,200 square feet was vacated and released back to PBS to facilitate the planned transfer of the property to the City of Baton Rouge.' This apace was used for the storage of bagged amosite and crocldollte asbestos.
Asbestosis and other serious health ailments have been attributed to the inhalation or ingestion of asbestos dust requiring strict precautions by all personnel who may become exposed to asbestos dust or airborne particles.
For your information, these samples were collected and tested in accordance with OSHA Regulation 29, CFR.Part 1910.93a-Asbestos. Although steps are being taken to reduce airborne concentrations in the future, we believe the existing hazard potential will warrant special attention before the space is again occupied.
