POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS Health & Environm ntal Scienc s T.I.M.E. SYSTEM DR-0267-9698 ETHYLENE DIBROMIDE 90 LATEST REVISION: 02/07/89 SYNONYMS PAGE I 03/26/98 REPT H APPEARANCE: light yellow clear liquid ODOR DESCRIPTION: sweet# nauseating WARNING PROPERTIES: Odor threshold for most people is 15 to 25 ppm. Odor is inadequate warning of excessive exposure. EXPOSURE GUIDELINES: Ethylene dibromide: OSHA PEL is 20 ppm TWA# 30 ppm C eiling# 50 ppm Peak. ACGIH categorizes as A3# Skin# without a designated TLV. PELS are in accord with those recommended by OSHA# as in the 1989 revision of PELS. Stoddard solvent: ACGIH TLV and OSHA PEL are 100 ppm. PELS are in accord with those recommended by OSHA, as in the 1989 revision of PELS. A "skin" notation following the exposure guideline refers to the potential for dermal absorption of the material. It is intended to alert the reader that inhalation may not be the only route of exposure and that measures to minimize dermal exposures should be consider d. --------------------------------------- POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS --------------------------------------- This section includes possible adverse effects which could occur if this material is not handled in the recommended manner. These effects apply to stated material and may not apply to dilutions or formulations of that material. EYE - May cause pain. - May cause moderate irritation with corneal injury. SKIN - Short single exposure may cause severe skin burns. - Rapidly absorbed through skin in amounts which could cause death. - The dermal LD50 has not been determined. INGESTION - Single dose oral toxicity is considered to be high. - Single dose oral LD50 has not been determined. - Small amounts swallowed incidental to normal handling operations are not likely to cause injury; however, swallowing amounts larger than that may cause serious injury# even death. - If aspirated (liquid enters the lung), may cause lung damage or even death due to chemical pneumonia. - A case of human poisoning by ingestion of ethylene dibromide was reported to result in liver and kidney injury. * TRADEMARK OF THE DOW CHEMICAL COMPANY DOW RESTRICTED no ioo CONFTOFN'l TAl POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS Health t Environmental Sci nces T.I.M.E. SYSTEM DR-0267-9698 ETHYLENE DIBROMIDE 90 PAGE 2 03/26/98 REPT H ACUTE INHALATION EFFECTS - Excessive exposure may cause irritation to upper respiratory tract (nose and throat). - Excessive exposure may cause lung injury. - Signs and symptoms of excessive exposure may be anesthetic or narcotic effects. SUBCHRONIC EFFECTS - R peated excessive exposures may cause lung, upper respiratory, liv r, kidney, blood and testicular effects. CHRONIC EFFECTS / CARCINOGENICITY - Has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. - This mixture contains component(s) which are listed as potential carcinogens for hazard communication purposes under OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.1200. IARC and NTP. TERATOGENIC EFFECTS - Has caused birth defects in laboratory animals only at doses toxic to the mother. REPRODUCTIVE EFFECTS - In animal studies, has been shown to interfere with fertility in males and females. - Studies of workers repeatedly exposed to EDB suggest that it may affect fertility of males. MUTAGENICITY - Has been shown to have mutagenic activity in bacteria. - Animal mutagenicity studies were negative in some cases and positive in other cases.
