^As a result of a complaint telephoned to our Division on January 8,
v^^r7l981, by a worker at the Delco-Moralne Plant, Wagoner Ford Road,
;
Dayton, Ohio, concerning exposure to oil mist, an industrial hygiene
survey was accomplished on February 9, 1981. This survey was done
./^Jr^.with your concurrence, with duplicate air sampling being performed
by Delco-Moraine industrial hygienists.
Review of the process involving oil mists disclosed Cross Dial Index
. . machines machining and drilling holes in newly fabricated automobile
- master cylinders. The oil in question was Polar 14-C containing'
60 percent mineral oil. Five Mine Safety Appliance Model G personal
air sampling pumps in-line with a sampling train consisting of "AA"
Vs -;
mixed cellulose esther filters were used to take full shift breathing
. zone air samples of workers involved. Attachment 1 is a table of the
-sample results along with the allowable permissible exposure limit
.--.w-.or threshold limit value.
. ..
; .~
A*'Review of the air sampling data readily discloses none exceeded the regulatory requirements established by the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration or the guidelines established by the American ' Conference cf Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Review of the
>-. literature indicates that heat-decomposed oil mists are classifed more of an irritant than a health hazard.
