SUBJECT: ASBESTOS STANDARDS - OSIIA
Gentlemen:
In view of the following excerpt from a recent Pollution Committee meeting, srould each of you reviev/ your local situation and report bach if a serious condition exists that either cannot he eliminated or satisfactorily controlled:
"Dr. MacMillan reported that the OSIIA Asbestos Standard is effective as of July of this year and that the restrictions are so severe as to warrant a serious attempt to stay away from its use and use a substitute. There followed considerable discussion regarding the allowables as well as the extent of the necessary monitoring, physical examinations, etc., in order to fulfill the OSKA requirements under this standard. It was also brought out that asbestos is in such divergent and multiple usage that to categorically state we would use a substitute would be both impz'actical and impossible.
Mr* Kewraan suggested that an engineering bulletin be put out, pointing out the developing situation and suggesting substitutes to be used under specific circumstances. It was further sug gested that Mr. B. J. Sasser be requested to study this matter.
It was the consensus of those present that we should proceed to eliminate wherever pos5*ible the use of asbestos-fiberbearing materials. Copy of the CS1IA Standard for exposure to asbestos dust is attached hereto."
