Dear Mr. McCormick:
I send you herewith the analytical results on your employees.
In view of the receipt, of your telegram I should point out to you
that it takes a little time to carry out such amrnber of analyses
by working them into p u r regular daily quota. Except under the
most unusual circumstances involving the immediate serious danger
of the personnel, we ibould not dislocate our regular analytical
regimen -by undertaking to complete such a number- of samples as
this In any one batch. On this account the results came to my
desk only yesterday and are being forwarded without any additional
delay. .

I a m not sure that I have discussed the situation presented by systematic analyses of this type with you^or with Dr. Wilson. I think, however, that I should make a few comments concerning the interpretation and disposition of data of this type. Thex*e is a . tendency to look at these figures in much the same manner* as one would air analyses I decry this tendency very much, since the significance of the results is much greater than results of analyses of the air. These ere primarily individual clinical data, and they should not be allowed to be gathered and dealt with in any other fashion., They should be recorded on medical records,and while it is not absolutely necessary that they be regarded as confidential, they should certainly not be bandied about for the consideration and interpretation of people other than those immediately concerned with medical records and medical results. They have great medico legal significance and,in certain specific instances, they have great diagnostic significance.
If I make these comments unsolicited, it is for two reasons. We have had some considerable experience with this problem, and we have seen these data misused to the very considerable embarrassment of everybody concerned. Moreover, the matter of obtaining these re suits is expensive, and they should be studied carefully along with the clinical and environmental data so as to obtain every bit of information from them that can be extracted. Otherwise# In my opinion, it is much too expensive a way to obtain the necessary information. This is one of the matters that I had wanted to dis cuss with Dr. Wilson vhai, some time ago, I called your attention to the fact that I would like to talk with him at some mutually conveni ent time. Frankly, we do not like merely to carry out analyses of this type without knowing that the data are being used effectively.

The fact is that we do not like to do these analyses merely as a technical service, since our whole use of this procedure has been for the purpose of obtaining medical and physiological information. W e believe that we can take your data and obtain much more informa tion from it than may now be being obtained. We think that either you should supply us with the information on the conditions of the work of these men, together with the pertinent employment and clinical data, or else that you should take all of the information, put it together and study it properly. Otherwise we are both working somewhat in the dark. In other words, we are not giving you our best advice .because of our ignorance ef your situation, and lor the same reason we are not learning anything of consequence in the conduct of this work.
A few specific points in the results should be noted. I have underscored certain high results. It is not possible for me to advise what should be done in the case of these men, since I do not know the facts. However, the results on the high men should be checked, unless it is certain that they are representative of the lead exposure of these men. Some appropriate action should be take in the case of Howard Fessier, at least, although, as I say, I am not in position at present to say what action should be taken.
