BONNEY PITTSBURGH OFFICE PLAINTIFFS EXHIBIT AL-264 10 industrial hygienists SAFETY DIRECTORS July 20, 1972 RE: APPROVED ASBESTOS RESPIRATORY PROTECTION It has come to our attention that Mine Safety Appliances has in recent monthsupgraded their Dustfoe 66 respirator which is now approved under Schedule 21B. As such, its use is appropriate for protection against asbestos dusts in concen trations less than 51 fibers per cc. Also, the 3M #8710 single use respirator has been approved under the new schedule, 21C, and is likewise acceptable for asbestos. Since these two respirators, which are smaller and relatively more comfortable than most of the other respiratory on the previous lists sent you, we thought you would want to know of their suitability at an early date. A revised list of respiratory protective devices suitable for protection against asbestos dust is attached. The list is not' complete. It Is merely intended to present a representative group and includes some of the more commonly used brands. If you normally use and prefer other types, we suggest that you contact your supplier to determine which of his respirators meet the require ments of the OSHA regulation for asbestos. Although the regulation promulgated on July 7 specifies that only respirators approved under 30 CFR 11 shall be used for protection against asbestos dust, there is only one respirator approved under this schedule as of this date. However, the Bureau of Mines has allowed a transition period from the present to March 30, 197U, during which respirators approved under previous schedules will be considered as approved. After this date, we will be required to use filter and air-line respirators approved under 30 CFR 11 (these will be classified as 21C and 19C respectively). Until that time, we consider filter respirators approved under Schedule 2IB and continuous flow or pressuredemand, air-line respirators approved under Schedule 19B to be appropriate for protection against asbestos dust.
