HAYHUR3T, M.D., Ph.D. Consult Industrial Hygienist Columbus, Ohio Miss Ease Moriarty Hanna Building Cleveland, Ohio July 3, 1935 My dear Miss Moriarty: After my examination of Mr. Hpfp and of all of the data at hand in his case, and a search whra^3Hhave made into the relationship of lead poisoning and gangrene of the extremities, I have come to the conclusion (1) that Mr. a definite exposure to lead poisoning in his work at menaten Holler Bearing Company, and (2) that isuch lead poisoning aggravated, if it did not originally cause, the capillary and nervous disease followed by gangrene in his lower extremities. I am glad to say that both Dr. Curtis and Dr. Wiseman, of the Department of Iviedical and Surgical Research at Ohio State Univelrsity, appear to concur with me in these findings, I have collected a number of precedential instances grouped as follows: Lead poisoning From Apparently Insignificant Exposures Lead Poisoning and the Capillaries Lead Poisoning and the Nervous System Lead Poisoning and Gangrene I am enclosing two copies of each of the above memoranda herewith, with the suggestion that the originals be duly filed with the Commis sion. My personal examination of Mr. fflBjlHHV and noting some of the dis crepancies in the histories whicnhavebeen made inhis^ase by the Ford Hospital and The Mayo Clinic, and what Mr. told me - all of these lead me to believe that it would be u establish the fact that lead poisoning caused his affliction since come of the statements indicate that he had a vascular disease affect ing his extremities prior to his known exposure to lead, but from the findings made by the Ford Hospital in 1928 and the report sent to us at that time, there is no doubt that he had lead poisoning in 1928 and before gangrene appeared;' that he could have gotten it from trie type of work he was doing, and that such lead poisoning aggravated the vascular and nervous condition which he already had, bringing on the gangrene, and, of course, predisposing to the amputations which have been found necessary. siiail be willing to testify accordingly should this case come to a ie gal hea ring.
