ROOF PREPARATION AND FINISHING
Preparing the Old Roof
roofing: Nail down old warped and aplit shins to provide smooth even surface. Replace od shingles that have rotted or blown away. w Construction: Roofing boards should not be re than 6" wide, free from dampness and fitted igly together. Use saturated felt over roof irda.

the save and rake edge lA". An alternate method is to use strip shingles as starter course revers ing them so tabs point up the roof. This applies to old or new construction.
Two thicknesses of mineral surfaced roofing, 12" and 24" wide, should be applied in the valley
before the shingle courses approach this point. Shingles should be nailed over the valley mate rial. valley should be chalk-lined 6" at top gradu ated to 8* at bottom to form guide for shingle application.
Flashing Details

Applying Shingle Type Hip and Ridge
Bend and apply individual shingles over hips and ridges exposing them 5" and nailing 51/*" from exposed end. This eliminates exposed nailing and is known as Boston Type Hip and Ridge.
SHINGLE APPLICATION
Applying Roll Type Hip and Ridge
9" starter strip may be used on hips and ridges where economy is desired. It is bent over so that approximately 4" overlaps each slope. Nails are driven y%" from edge and 4" apart.

The second course should be started by applying a shingle which has had the first tab cut in two. See illustration. Then alternate starting sbingle in succeeding courses as you progress up the roof by applying a full length shingle, and then one in which the hrst tab has been cut in two.
Complete all courses with full siied shingles.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Hexagon Strip Shingles are entitled to the class "C" rating of the Under writers Laboratories only when applied on inclined surfaces having a pitch or slope of at least 4" to the horizontal foot.
Hexagon Strip Shingles are self-spacing and in application should be laid end to end without spaces between the shingles.
NAILS -- These should be large head galvanized Roofing Nails 1% inches long for re-roofing over old wood shingles and 1 inch long for new construction.
Workmen should wear rubber-soled shoes as this prevents scuffing of shingles in warm weather.
