Smith E n e u tln SecreU ty A group of interested members from the CTFA Talc Subcommittee met on September 29, 1976, at the Mt. Sinai Complex, Nathan Cummings Basic Sciences Building in New York City, with Dr. Arthur Langer and Dr. Arthur Rhl. Those attending, were: Tryggve Baak George Lee, Johnson & Johnson Robert Rolle, Johnson & Johnson George Sandland, Bristol-Myers John Schelz, Johnson & Johnson Terry Smith, Faberge Ian Stewart, Walter C. McCrone Assoc. Robert Suffis, Mennen Company Norman Estrin, CTFA Dr. Estrin opened the meeting with a description of the activities and committee structure of the CTFA. Dr. Sandland described the operation of the CTFA- Standards Committee and the development of the Talc Standard. A copy of the galley proof was submitted to those present. Dr. Rolle than described the methodology studies by the Talc Subcommittee for chrysotile amphiboles. A packet of information was distributed to those present. This included the following: 1. September 23, 1975 letter and attachments to Dr. Schaffner at FDA. 2. Reprint on the "Detection of Quartz and Clay Minerals by Differential Thermal Analysis". 3. Reprint on "Characterization of Talc and Associated Minerals". 4. November 21, 1974 Policy Guideline with regard to Tremolite and Talc from the U.S. Department of Labor. 5. Results of the CTFA roundrobin analysis for amphibole ,. materials in Talc by X-ray defraction. nay`14, 1976 letter from John P. Sinai and Johnson & Johnson analyses for chrysotile, anthophyllite and tremolite. Dr. Langer noted a paper in press that he has prepared on cosmetic talcs. A copy of the paper was submitted to Dr. Estrin for sub mission to the Subcommittee. 'Dr, Langer noted the ramifications of hearings to be held in Seattle by the Mining Enforcement & Safety Administration. Dr. Rohl described the methods of analysis wsed by Mt. Sinai in the preparation of its. paper. After a tour of the laboratories and lunch, the group reconvened for brief discussion. Dr. Rolle suggested the possibility of having Dr. Langer participate in a roundrobin analysis utilizing the CTFA methodology. Dr. Langer expressed interest in participating in such a study. He noted that he has bought on the open market samples in 1976 of cosmetic talcs which he is using in studies by his own methodology. Dr. Estrin expressed strong concern that, although materials may be purchased in 1976, unless lot numbers have been checked, it may very well be that these also represent old samples. Dr. Estrin requested a list of the materials under test and offered to check with the manufacturers for lot numbers in order to ascertain the year that the talc was packaged. The possibility of providing a list of companies 3- - that would be more representative and that would have proper code numbers was discussed. Dr. Langer could then choose from the open shelves products that would represent significant volume of the cosmetic industry. This matter -will be investigated further by the Talc Subcommittee.
