MINUTES of the NATIONAL INSULATION MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION New York, New York Part of the Occupational Health & Safety Committee net with a part of the Duct Comitt a e. The transactions of this meeting as reported by Mr. J. M. Barnhart are attached. Following this combined meeting, there was a brief aeetiag of the Occu pational Health'5: Safety Committee. The following persons were present: L. 3*. Grant, M.Q. C. L. Sheckler F. H. Edwards H. Mesler J. Vyverbeirg PEG Industries J ohms-Manville Owens-Corning Huberoid Owens-Corning Mr. Sheckler indicated that the work of the Education Subcommittee was progressing satisfactorily. The asbestos pamphlet had been prepared and circulated for comments and/or epproval. The fiber glass pamphlet will be available for full committee review early in.April. Dr. Grant pointed out that it was his understanding that both these pamphlets and the Educational Program for the coning year were to be reviewed at a meeting of the full committee. This was not done with the asbestos pamphlet. Dr. Grant's ex perience was that the tine limitation set for review by the subcommittee had passed before he had had a chance to review the pamphlet. Ke felt this was unfortunate inasmuch as he would have liked to have seen either -a reference to' ore-employment and periodic medical examinations of the workers' or a specific limitation clearly indicating that the scope of the pamphlet did not include medical control procedures. .As the pamphlet is at the present time, it will invite justified criticism by the medical profession. Mr. Sheckler is of the opinion that comments with reference to medical ex animations were inappropriate to include in the pamphlet. This reflects a basic disagreement within the committee which must be resolved at a later meeting of the full committee. Although it was discussed, no action was decided upon to resolve this basic difference of opinion. The fiber glass pamphlet draft prepared by the Education Subcommittee will be reviewed at a committee meeting in New York on April l6, 1968. Mr. J. M. 3ernhart wished to be advised on how he should handle requests coming to him for assistance in health-related problems. The following general philosophy was agreed upon: He should first direct such requests quested HIMA support, he should direct the request to Dr. Grant, Chairman of the Occ.1p3tior.el Health L Safety Committee, for appropriate action. -2- The current research proposals oa flke- glass prepared by tha Industrial Hygiene Foundation were briefly discussed. As a result, it was apparent that there were a number of questions that each ccnpany who had been asked to support the work wished to have- the opportunity of discussing in a gen eral meeting with the Industrial Hygiene Foundation and representatives of the companies whose support was being solicited. Dr. Grant agreed to con tact Dr. delreYiile, the Managing Director of the Industrial Hygiene Founda tion, and suggest such a meeting. Respectfully submitted, L. 3. Grant, M. D.
