With reforence to your letter to Ur. Baxter wo note that your available quontitiaa of di- and trlohloroLiphenyl isomers are very small indeed, (.a .
ou know we have already provided samples for Jensen and Widmark (Stockholm), iilohorUson (Shell, England) and Tatton (Government laboratory, England/, t-.d
Liie rouidual quantities are now to o rookoned in terms of milligrams. e auuume you will bo writing appropriately to the Gyracusa University its search Corporation.
On your requout for information concerning the tests made by the above
workers on our samples I oan summaries as follows 1-
t
(a) Jensen and Widmark
1 have seen no development sinos Vidmaxk's latiasf
of Fobruary 27th 1967 addressed to Gone Wilde.
^ ;
(b) 'Patton Copies, of a paper entitlod 'Chlorinated hydrocarbons in British ' Wildlife' by i).C. holmes, J.H. ^immona and J.O'G. `Ifetton, Mature Vol 216, Get 21, 1967 pp. '.'27-229 wars passed to Messrs. Vilda and Duohanan with my letter of 4th November, 1967. ThJ a paper conflnao the work of Jenaen and in particular shows close similarity between gas-liquid ohromatograms of (a) extracts of Kestrel liver oil and (b) a commercial polychlorobiphenyl resin.
(c) f`.iehardson Kichordoon lias r.ot published anything so far, but J. hobirson,
uloo of LJ)pll itouriaxch I.td., Tuns tail laboratory, Bittingboume, Kont has publishod n paper entitled 'Residues of Urcanochlorino Incoctioidoe in -.ac-d Birds in the United l.innilom, Chemintry fund Induntry 19^7, l>p, 1974-19B6- 'IV-Jo io a . coiiiprohonniva roview but ao far au X cm see it does not suggest that any of the
reniduea contain chlorinated polyphenyls.
i'.owovnr, 1 was in correspondence with Richardson in November, 1967 (copies
herewith) which showed that he was cutisfied that ootoohlorobiphenyl was rre.jent
and that his results are substantially in line with those of Tatton at al. You
will notu also that he believes that the contamination of bird life is in the
valley of our Mver Witlisra.
.
I have judlcioucly followed up thin olue with a view to locating the source
of the contaminationi there appearo to be no operation of any site involving
Area lore within tho without valley, Tho nearest is at Kings Lynn with usu,*e
for electrical ;.urtioneu. As NCR r> /rorontu the groutost off-take of Aroclor
and tic tlioro in lively to bo at lootit :.om wastage in the prooess my suspicion
la that it io oitliur in making NCR or possibly, in dealing with the scrap that
the contamination ariuee.

On your request for information concerning the testa mad by tha above
workers on our samples I can summarise m followsi~
.
(a) Jensen and Widnark
I have seen no development sinos Widnark's latter
of February 27th 1967 addressed to Gan Wild.
(b) Patton Copies of a paper entitled 'Chlorinated Hydrocarbons in British . Wildlife* by D.C. Holms, J.H. Simons and J.O'C. Patton, Nature Vol 216, Oct 21,
1967 pp. 227-229 were passed to Masars. Wild and Buohanan with my latter of 4th November, 1967* This paper eonfirms the work of Jenson and in particular shows
cloaa similarity between gas-liquid ahromatograms of (a) xtrsadis of Kestrel liver oil and (b) a commaroial polyehlorobiphaayl resin.
(o) Rjchagdeon
Richardson has not published anything so far, but J. Robinson,
also of Shall Research Ltd., Tunst&ll Laboratory, Sittingbourr, Kant has
. published a paper entitled 'Residues of Qrganochlorina Inaactioidas in Dead Birds
in tha United Kingdom, Qsamistxy and Industry 1967* PP* 1974-1986. This is a
comprehensive review but as far as I oan see it doe not suggest that any of tha
residues contain chlorinated polyphanyla.
However, I was in orraspondanoe with Rioh&rdscn in November, 1967 (copies herewith) whish showed that he was satisfied that ootoehlorobiphenyl was present and that his results are substantially in lira with those of Tattcin at al. You will note also that ha believe that the oontamination of bird life is in tha
valley of asr Rivar Withaa.
......
I have Judieiously followed up this olu with a view to locating tha source
of th contaminations there appears to be no operation of say aiz involving
Aroolora within th Witham vaSay. Th nearest is at King Lynn with usa^
for olectrieal purposes. As ICR represents the greatest off-take of Aroelor
and as there is likely to b at least ease wastage in tha process my suspicion
is that it is either in making NCR or possibly in dealing with th* scrap that
tha oontamination arises.
'
COMPANY" there is no indication that th Publio Authorities axe worried.
