Kehoe Kettering Laboratory of Applied Physiology University of Cincinnati Eden Avenue 19 Cincinnati, Ohio REPLY PLEASE F E F E R T O Dear Dr. Kehoe: This is in reply to your letter of February 9 regarding the Hose Mash with special facepiece similar to one which we designed for the Ethyl Corporation for use in repairing tanks. This mask consisted of a facepiece similar to the one used on our Abrasive Mask illustrated in the en closed bulletin CS-lO. The flip front frame which is us ually equipped with a screen for protecting the facepieoe lens from sand and shot was equipped with a welding plate and cover lens. A short fireproof duck hood fitted over the head down to the shoulders with snaps for attaching to the facepiece. An air hose connection at the bottom of the facepiece permitted this to be attached to our stand ard hose mask in place of the regular all-vision facepiece. We manufactured several of these special facepieces for the Ethyl Corporation prior to the war. However, the standard flip front frame did not provide sufficient clearance for easy mounting of the welding lens and cover lens, and it was our intention to make a special flip front frame suitable for this special type of mask. However, this would necessi tate a new mold and because of the war, this mold was never built. It is our intention to complete the tools and molds necessary for building a satisfactory facepiece of this type as soon as conditions will permit. However, if there is a special need for such a facepiece in a number of Industries, we could probably arrange to start work on the necessary mold and tools soon. A brasive Mask gives com plete protection to the w earer from the h eav y concentrations of fine dust p resen t in shot or sandblasting rooms, yet is sturdy enough to show rem arkable endurance under the im pact of high velocity abrasives. The complete assembly com prises a hood, facepiece a n d connecting tube, flow control valve with "bump-proof" adjustment, quick release connection and optional air filter, and a web belt to carry the valve a n d filter. The m ask is furnished with either a lightw eight or heavy duty hood. The lightweight hood which is recom m ended for light sand blasting is m ade from latex-covered silk, and the crown is reinforced with heavy rubber, since w ear is greatest at this point. The heavy duty hood is m ade from sheet rubber reinforced with duck, with vulcanized seams. This hood will w ear well under the most extrem e con ditions and is recom m ended for all shot blasting or w here sand blast conditions are severe. Hoods are fastened to the m ask by snap fasteners so that they m ay b e easily detached. A special ring is provided at the top of the hood so that the m ask m ay be hung upright w hen not in use. (Note: Hoods can also be m ade upon special order from chrome leather, fireproof duck and other m aterials). The gas-m ask type, all rubber facepiece is absolute ly dust-tight a n d quickly ad ju stab le to fit an y face. Air is fed into the facepiece through a cor rugated tube, and ingeniously deflected from the w earer's eyes. The air 's exhausted from the face piece through twin exhalation valves and circulates u n d er the hood, thereby providing a cooling effect. The wide-vision lens is m ade from safety-glass and is protected from pitting by an alloy steel screen cover, m ounted in a rubber frame. This screen and frame can be flipped upw ard when clearer vision is desired for inspection of work. Lens a n d screen are quickly removable. The Air-Flow C ontrol Valve attach ed to the end of the co rru g ated tube has a "bum p-proof" adjustm ent. The setting cannot be changed accidentally, since the handle is norm ally held in a released, or "free w heeling" position by m eans of a spring, a n d must be pushed in by the operator to an "en g a g ed " posi- M . This valve is const :ucted so that at least 3 cubic feet of air p er m inute ilows into the m ask w hen com pletely.shut off. In this w a y the w e a re r is assu red of suf ficient air for com plete protection. (A re g u la r air valve must be installed on the air line to shut off air w hen mask is not in use. See diagram below ). A lever at the air-supply nipple im m ediately detaches the mask from the air line w hen pulled upw ard by the operator. In the event of an air-supply failure, the operator can break the connection, breathe through the filter on the free end, and leave the confined space. A replaceable charcoal cartridge filter for rem oving objectionable odors and foreign matter, such as dirt or oil, from the incoming air, is optional equipm ent at no increase in price. The air hose supplied with this m ask h as b e e n tested at 150 lb. w orking p ressu re a n d kinking the hose will not decrease the air flow b y m ore th an 10%. Hose an d couplings are further subjected to a pull best of 200 pounds. A 15 ft. length of hose com plete with couplings is furnished with each m ask as standard, but an y length up to 50 ft. can b e supplied if desired. AIR SUPPLY The M.S.A. A brasive Mask must b e sup plied continuously with respirable air within th e p ressu re ra n g e of 8 to 15 pounds per square inch gauge. As a source of air supply, low -pressure exter nally-lubricated blowers are preferable to conventional high-pressure, internally lubricated com pressors. Fig. 1 (see pag e 4) show s installation diagram of the M.S.A. C leanA ir Blower w hile Fig. 2 shows recom m ended equipm ent for filter ing and reducing ordinary shop com pressed air. M. S. A. COMPRESSED AIR REGULATING AND CLEANING EQUIPMENT The equipm ent shown in Figure 2 is sufficient for supply ing from 1 to 3 masks. M.S.A.
