Epoxy II deposited solids from a cooling tower clean-out in L'F-402, the waste solidification sump at B-5100. A question was raised whether the carbon adsorption facility was capable of removing any chromates that might be in the water (the solids were contaminated with chromates). Caigon Carbon Corporation was called. Chromates can be removed with the carbon but the removal is as much a physical filtering as adsorption. The memo from Caigon is attached. When asked if the chromates would cause problems for Caigon during the regeneration, Marta Bourke, Caigon Carbon Corporation, said that it could if there was a high concentration. Small concentrations should not be a problem. A downed power line caused power to be cut off from the Class I landfill Tuesday morning. Further inspection revealed that the entire line to the landfill would need to be replaced. The reoiacement was made on an emergency basis to return the landfill oumps to service as soon as possible. The pumps were back in service Wednesday evening at a cost of approximately S5,000. This line was relatively new. The electrical maintenance crew is looking into the probable cause for the failure but at this time it is suspected to have been lightening. Mark Larson attended an Asbestos Team meeting Tuesday. Training and personnel requirements for removal of asbestos from public buildings was discussed. Mark Larson attended the Environmental Network meeting Tuesday. A umber of topics were discussed including some feedback on the TWC cit, some changes in PCS handling, and some changes in the eeortable Quantity list. John Harrison, Russ Leidy, Bernie Allen, Woody Woodward, Helen Johnson, Mark Jones, MarshallTurner, Dick Symm and Mark Larson met Wednesday to discuss the problem with the liner in cell 2 of the Class I landfill. A large Quantity of water appeared in the leak detection sump following the heavv rain of April 23th. A decision was made to flood the top liner with seawater in stages to try to determine where the leak is located. The decision to dig up the floor of the landfill find and repair the leak will be made based on where it is suspected t o be. to Seawater was pumped into the Class I landfill, cell 2, on Thursday and the level established itself, overnight, at 1' S" above the liner. Sixty gallons of water was removed from the leak detection sump on Friday morning but it was not seawater (a conductivity test indicated it was not even diluted seawater). The water will stand on the liner at this height over the weekend and checked again on Monday.
