FROM:
H.F. ELY, SENIOR SAFETY INSPECTOR, HEALTH & SAFETY DEER PARK MANUFACTURING COMPLEX
TO: L.R. BROERING, PROCESS MANAGER, CAT REFORMING DEER PARK MANUFACTURING COMPLEX
SUBJECT: MONITORING RESULTS FOR INORGANIC LEAD AND HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM DURING ABRASIVE BLASTING AT CAT REFORMING
Attached are industrial hygiene monitoring results for total dust, inorganic lead and hexavalent chromium which were collected downwind of abrasive blasting at the CR-3 Offsite area. Both area samples were positioned approximately 60 feet downwind of the blasting on tank 0-317. The lead result indicates a potential for lead exposure, exceeding the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL), exists downwind of abrasive blasting on lead-based painted surfaces. Additional monitoring will be required to more fully define affected areas. Personnel who must work in areas downwind of abrasive blasting on lead-based painted surfaces should wear dust respirators (3M 9920 or dual cartridge with HEPA filters). Refer to attached HS&E Guidelines fcr Application and Removal of Lead/Chromate Based Coatings. The sampling results may be compared to the following exposure guidelines:
Eight-hour Time-weighted Average
Inorganic Lead Hexavalent Chromium Total Dust
0.05 mg/m3 0.05 mg/m3 10.0 mg/m3
These results should be posted in an area accessible to the personnel who work in the CR-3 Offsites area.
If you have any questions, please call me at extension 7710.
