Mr. C. G. Carlsson, Production Manager KemaNord Stenungsunds verken P. 0. Box 8 S-kkk 01 Stenungsund, Sweden
Dear Mr. Carlsson:
I recently became aware through the Chemical Week Newswire Service, Item 3280, that a unique air-jet ventilation system is being installed in your plant to protect workers from vinyl chloride monomer. A copy of this news release is below:
`'ITEM 3280--ANTI-VINYL MONOMER STOCKVIM, SWEDEN, NOV. 1--A UNIQUE AIR-JET VENTILATION SYSTEM TO PROTECT WORKERS FROM VINYL CHLORIDE MONOMER EXPOSURE WILL BE TESTED IN KEMANORD S PVC PLANT HERE EARLY NEXT YEAR. ESSENTIALLY, STREAMS OF AIR FROM THE PLANTS VENTILATION SYSTEM WILL BE DIRECTED THROUGH ONE AND TWO INCH NOZZLES TO REACTOR AREAS THEN VENTED OUT OF THE PLANT. THE RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE SYSTEM, SIMILAR TO THAT USED IN STERILE AREAS OF HOSPITAL OPERATING ROOMS, WILL BE INSTALLED BY SVENSKA FLAEKTFABRIKEN (STOCKHOLM). IT IS EXPECTED TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR THE PLANT TO MEET NEWLY-IMPOSED ONE PART-FER-MILLTGN EXPOSURE LIMIT."
Providing this information is not strictly proprietary, I would appreciate receiving whatever information you are at liberty to forward to me at your earliest convenience. As you know, PVC producers in the United States are faced with this same problem and perhaps this development in Sweden could be helpful to us at UNIROYAL.
I am looking forward to meeting you at future meetings of the Vinyl Chlorid Safety Association.
Very truly yours,
to. n ^
W. M.'lliff Plant Engineer
