Box 3086 Dear Mr. Moore: Your letter and the medical records etc., mentioned therein, were received some days ago. Your proposal to meet with me in August is satisfactory to me, since some time (more than usual) will be required for me to examine the documents, since my vision has suffered considerable deterioration recently, and since I may have to resort to non-disabling surgery for no more than a very short period. However I shall not be leaving Cincinnati for any summer vacation period. * I have no questions to raise with you, but we shall have to discuss the existing situation at some length. Perhaps I should tell you now of my status in relation to Ethyl Corporation. I became their Corporate Medical Director when the new company "Ethyl Gasoline Corporation" (now changed to "Ethyl Corporation") was first organized with Earle Webb as its President. He had been in General Motors Legal Department and was selected, for his utter competence and reliability, to head this entirely new development, the brain child, technically speaking, of the General Motors Research Organization. A genius, Charles Kettering, who conceived of and investigated the entire anti-knock field came up with "lead" as a remarkably effective agent for eliminating the "knock" in the combustion of gasoline. This "discovery" was a brilliant piece of physical research. Mr. Webb came to me for advice for I had done the medical investigation that revealed the nature of the new chemical compound - tetraethyl-lead which had been synthesized in order to have a compound of lead (organic lead) which was soluble in gasoline. Little recognition was given by the technical people that this act had resulted in the existence of toxicity far beyond that of any inorganic compound, thereby promoting a new industry based upon the most toxic compound of lead than hithertoo had been in existence. There is a great deal of interesting fact in the background of this industry which we shall wish to discuss together but I shall not attempt further to write about here. However it is important for you to know that I have not at any time been an ordinary employee at Ethyl Corporation. When Earle Webb asked me to take over the Medical Direction of the Corporation - then the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation - I stated to him that I was fully answerable to the University of Cincinnati and that I could accept his offer only if the University consented, under the circumstances, to my doing so. 0003262 \ R. Eric Moore, Esq Page Two June 27, 1980 The President of the University, Walter Langsam, was my friend who knew that as a scientist I would not be answerable in fact to anyone, and on this basis he agreed to my continuation as Professor and Head of the Institute of Environmental Health in the College of Medicine of the University of Cincinnati. In this capacity I have continued, as well as I could, to develop this Institute as a center for research and professional training. I retired, in my agreed upon relation to Ethyl Corporation, at the orthodox age and have since been on a pension - called (for courtesy) - a consultant. However I have not contributed in any way to Ethyl Corporation for over ten years. I am now also fully retired from the University having been honored by being granted the title of Emeritus Professor of Occupational Medicine, and as a priviledged character, (having founded the Institute), I have an office and a secretary and an assistant, in order to prepare the publication of the results of an experimental program carried out for thirty-five years, up to the time of my retirement, which came upon me unexpectedly (because I was very busy).
