c e rta in samples o f c h ic le experim entally produoed in k e ttle s fab ricated w ith a tin -le a d solder, contained appreciable q u an tities o f t i n to g e th e r w ith abnormal amounts o f lead* I n f a c t , in th e sp eotrographic a n a ly sis o f commercial c h ic le , t i n was always found to be p re se n t when th e le a d co n ten t was abnorm ally high* Thus, i t appeared, e a r ly i n th e in v estig atio n th a t so ld er was in a ll lik elih o o d th e ch ief source of the lead contam ination, and, perhaps th e only s ig n if ic a n t one* ( i t developed l a t e r th a t so ld er was th e only s ig n if ic a n t source of contam ination) In order to study the d is trib u tio n of lead in the o h iele, several methods w ere employed* C h ic le known by a n a ly s is to c o n ta in e x cessiv e q u a n titie s o f le a d , was d isso lv e d in v a rio u s o rg an ic so lv e n ts, whereupon a sedim ent was o b tained in w hich coarse m e ta llic p a r tic le s could be seen m ic ro s c o p ic a lly , w h ile many s p h e ric a l p a rtic le s of v ariab le size(fro m 0*0005 in* to 0*12 in* in diam .) eould ` . be seen w ith th e a id of a m icroscope* R adiographic exam ination of ch icle blocks also rev ealed th e presence of dense sp h erical p a rtic le s of v ariab le siz e , irre g u la rly d is trib u te d through the ch icle* Q u a lita tiv e analyses o f th e p a r tic le s is o la te d w ith e r from th e sedim ent of th e c h ic le so lu tio n s , or lo o ated by X -ray and removed from c h ic le blo ck s showed th e p resence o f le a d and tin *
Obviously chem ical an aly ses o f sm all samples o f such m a te ria l, no m a tte r how s e le c te d , c o u ld b e e x p ec te d t o g iv e e r r a t i o r e s u l t s , and such was th e case* On th e o th e r h an d , th e r a d io g ra p h ic ex am ination of ground c h ic le m ight be expected to give u sefu l in form ation as to th e nuMber, s iz e , and d is tr ib u tio n of th e so ld er p a r tic le s , th ereb y providing a d d itio n a l means fo r th e e lim in atio n of h eavily contam inated m aterial* This proved to be a u sefu l pro cedure*
