/ ASBESTOS BEARING MATERIALS On March 20, 1974, R. M. Howe, D. P. Legrande, P. Rlzzato, A. R. Simino, J- ?. White and J. L. Wes coat visited the Storehouse to Inspect various asbestos bearing materials that are stored and issued from that location. It had earlier been determined by contact with OSBA, NAD Safety and the Industrial Hygienist that those materials which had the fibers well bonded so there is little chance of the fibers being released do not cause a potential health hazard and do not require any special handling. Materials that do not have the fibers well bonded, do present a possible potential health hazard. Personal protective measures outlined in the OSHA standards on asbestos would be required for employees who handle, use and ultimately dispose of these materials. In all discussions that I have had with OSHA representatives in Houston it has been confirmed that the following asbestos bearing materials do not present a potential health hazard in normal usage: Solid sheet asbestos gasketing Woven fabric asbestos gaskets Spiral wound asbestos packed gaskets Asbestos gloves Asbestos welders blankets Graphite Impregnated woven asbestos packing Asbestos bearing floor tiling material Other asbestos bearing materials that could release fibers in normal usage and consequently could constitute a potential health hazard include: Wound asbestos rope in various sizes Asbestos wieking material Asbestos millboard I went to the Storehouse with Witzke on March 21, when we reviewed each of. the items in question. He agreed that the items in the first geeup would require no particular precautionary measures while the items in the second group would require precautionary measures during storage, handling and use to avoid the release of fibers into the atmosphere. This would include scoring the materials in impregnable containers and insuring that proper precautionary measures were taken when the materials were handled or used.
