While ";e want to keep expenses down as much as possible, I am in entire accord with your desire to. complete the study which has been started involving the employment of the two men which the Ohio Company^ had to lay off in order to talcs on your two subjects. We enclose herewith the necessary blanks cover ing the temporary employment of these men which we would thank you to please have executed and returned to us at your convenience. Mittnacht Ethyl Gasoline Corporation Chrysler Building New York City New York Dear Mr. Mittnacht: In carrying on the experimental work on certain selected subjects in relation to lead absorption from the handling of Ethyl Gasoline, I have found it nexessary to modify my original plans somewhat. We have now followed two subjects, Mr. f'cShane and Mr. Hock for a period of four months in the Laboratory, On June 1st they left the Laboratory and began employment with the Standard Oil Company of Ohio as regular filling station attendants* They will continue in this capacity for a period of four montjas during which time we agreed to compensate them at the rate of $5.00 per week in addition to their salary from the Sohio for their direct services to the Laboratory in providing samples of theif food and their excreta. We shall also reimburse them for exact duplicates of their meals for this period of time. In order to put them in positions at filling stations, it was necessary for the Standard Oil Company to lay off two of their older employees. (Their local manager originally felt that they would have no difficulty in placing these men but for obvious reasons, new stations have nob been opened up, and they could not find a place for two new men at cn ce Without removing two other men.) On this account, I agreed to take the two older men in the Laboratory and to s tudy them for the next four months. I should have preferred not to do this at present both on account of the expense involved and on account of the fact that the Laboratory is over burdened with analytical work at present. However not wishing to lose out on an experiment which in my opinion is very important, I have agreed to take these men on and to carry them for the next four months, it will be necessary to compensate them in such a way that they do not lose money during their period off the job. Thus, carrying on this experiment will cost a bit more than I originally anticipated though it will not be a large sum. At the end of this time, these men will return to thir former positions. Thus, we do not incur any responsibility for them excepting for the present period of four months.
