In opening the meeting the chairmen stated that several of the managers "who had been invited to attend were absent, due in part at least to other business engagement. One or tvro hei not been heard from. The chairman explained that he hod written the National Research Council asking that officials confer with the managers of the asbestos companies regarding the advisability of having an investigation undertaken of the problems of the industry. Problems specifically mentioned were those of improved grading methods and the finding of new uses for short fibre. Dr, Tory explained that the usual procedure in helping an industry was for the initial expense to be borne by the National Research Council ar.i for the support of the co-operating companies to be called for only when results of value had been obtained.
