Carbon black pigmented and aluminized "Duno* and a carbon blael pigmented vinyl topcoat were aleo applied over the clear 1QL8S-193 lacquer. The films were sprayed to a thick ness Of *10 + 5 mils and exposed in Florida facing south, at 43, ; At ths end of eighteen months' exposure the following bbeerratlone were rnadei (1) In general the pigmented vinyl type atrlpping lacquers have better Initial film properties and shorn less deterioration than the neoprene or ethyl oelluloee type. The Ins exception to thie is a oarbon black pigmented vinyl plasticized with trloresyl phosphate and modified with red load which has become quite boardy and Is definitely defiolant In impact realstance. (2) Pigmentlng-the dear vinyl with either carbon blaok or aluminum, I** topcoating elth a blank vinyl topooat definitely improves the durability. The use of a 5- mil thick black vinyl topooat appears to be Just as effective m completely pigmshting the film. The dear ROUS-193 film at this stage has practically completely disintegrated vith Only small portions of ths film having enough cohesive strength t o remain w tbe ifrns. (2) The slssrs sll have darkened considerably, show bad eurfaee shacking, decreased toughness and bad corrosive sffeot at thesubstrate with the lower aolsoular xraightAmF vinyl ahloridt content resin formulations being slightly poorer (the difference in decreestd toughness is not as noticeable in ths pigmented formulations); (3) fhsrs-appsare to b# no appreciable differenot in ths grads* of oarbon blaok tested, bat oarbon blaekdisparsed is a.;Vo. (3) Tb* moisture vapor transmission rate of the films topooated with an aluminised or oarbon blaok topooat has remained praotioally oonstant except In the ease of the clear film with the 20 mils thick aluminised topooat which has increased slightly. However, those films topcoated with *Protsk-.CoatB are shewing an inoreaee in KTTR above that of the aluminised film referred to in' the previous eentenoe, This oould possibly be due to the "ProtSk-Coat" becoming brittle. / The sample of `Protek Oont" evaluated was received from the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, Silver Spring, Maryland. An analysis of the sample indicates that It Is an asphaltlo paint packaged at total solids. Zt is non-pigment ed, but oontalns a small amount of fibrous asbestos. Zt contains y.o drying oils or resins. It hr* a paste consistency and at room temperature is barely mobile. Zt cannot be sprayed with conventional lacquer type lug equipment, bat it oan be sprayed without reduotion . at room temperature under the following conditions to give a fairly smooth film with a build of 5-10 mils par spray coat. Ah "Eclipse Oat* spray gun equipped with a #17 internally atojflsing head and an 1/d inoh tip oanbe used. A fluid pressure (ft 4$ pel and an air pressure at the gun of 6o pel are required. Zt air dries quite readily to a tacky, somewhat glossy film> have good adhesion to 52041 stripping lacquer at room temperature. The film has little or no ooheslTs strength- Zts remletanoe to sold eraek, however, is fairly poor; becoming stiff and brittle at *F.. and cracking off the undercoat in large piece# then bent through id* at this temperature. A topemb of highly aluminized 52041 lacquer iZQ% aluminum paste on the lacquer) will also crack under theee conditions but retains its adhesion to the dear undercoat. While a topooat of *Protek-0oat* dost lower the K7TE of the film somewhat it is no better In this respect than & topeoa of highly aluminized 52Q'4l laoquer at equal film thicktASSe.
