Ixi se ttin g up th is program e a rly la s t year, we personally talked to very employee in Asbeston, plaining to each the purpose o f the program. The ism ediate re a ctio n and subsequent reaction, to the b est o f our kncntLedge, has been most favorable. As you know, Dr. V ella p erac-ally interview s each person a fte r the physical exami nation and a fte r b is study o f th e Individual's chest X -rays. He reviews h is fin d in g , both c lin ic a l and X-ray, with the in d iv id u al. In th e event he discovers any known or suspicious condition not rela te d to tb s lungs, he Inform s th e individual and advises him to see h is fam ily doctor. In th e event he finds lung changes or markings th a t are alarm ing, he advises us to remove the person from th e Asbeston p la n t. In such a case, the individual i s taken to Dr. V eils' o ffice whins Dr. V eils reviews h is findings w ith th e person and shows him l i s X -rays on the view-boxes. He does an excellent job o f " te llin g " ---- end in no instance has he unduly alarmed the person. I s a m atter o f fa e t, h is interview s here been reassuring to the in d iv id u a l. Dr. V eils has further taken advantage o f every opportunity In such interview s to strengthen the Company's po sitio n and help promote good plpyee rela tio n s.
Please note th a t of th e e ig h t persons referred to in Paragraph A o f Enclosure I I , th ree were removed from the Asbeston p lan t b efo re"1957, and the other fiv e were moved in 1957 as reeomuoded by Dr. V e ils . Sinee the report (10/8/57) we bad the opportunity to move another anployee (a Negro) who had lung changes indicative of e a rly aabesto s is . That brings th e t o ta l sored to nine. As you w ill note in the rep o rt, we have twenty-two (22) persons, including th e already moved, th a t Dr. V eils i s concerned about, and who may in time have to be moved from A sbeston. There are four o th ers w ith lung conditions th a t bear w atching, but which in no way a re re la te d to asbestosis.
We have already made a l l our X-rays for the 1958 survey, and Dr. Wells plans to s ta rt h is exam inations in February. At the end o f oar 1958 medical and X-ray Asbeston survey we w ill give you another scauaary, and, in the meantime, w ill keep you informed of any notew orthy situ a tio n which may a ris e .
I tr u s t you had a sa tis fa c to ry and pleasant v is it in Uruguay. K indest personal regards.
