OCCUPATIONAL DISEASES: CALIFORNIA, 1950
SUMMARY
Reported cases of diseases attributable to occupational exposure totaled 12,245 during
1950. Of the total number reported, 33% resulted in lost time (absence beyond the day of
injury), 57% in no lost time, and in 10% it was not clear from the report whether oj|
lost time occurred.

54% of all cases reported were diseases of the skin. Half of these were due tio pois on vd.-
and an almost equally large proportion were caused by oontaot with oils, greases and solvents.! Oise ises of the eye made up 14% of the total; nearly all of these were conjunctivitis and ophthalmia oaiised by Id ing arc flash burns. Diseases of the bones and organs of movement accounted for 14% of the total, these were mainly synovitis, bursitis and tenosynovitis.
The leading occupational hazards which were responsible for these diseases wert plant and animal products (mainly poison oak) which caused 36% of the total, repeated motion, pressure a(id sudden shock which caused 19%, and radiation (mainly welding aro flash burns) which caused 14%. Many old a; well-known hazards such as lead, mercury, carbon monoxide, carbon tetrachloride and silica continued to be reported, as well as relatively newer agents such as beryllium and the newer agricultural ohemina Is.
35% of all occupational diseases ooourred among workers ir. manufacturing, 15% affect ed agricultural workers and 14% affected construction workers.
Occupational diseases were reported from all oourrties exoept Alpine. Los Angeles County accounted for 34% of the total, San Franoisco for 6%, Alameda for 5% and Santa Clara for 4%.
Occupational disease fatalities numbered 85. The distribution of these deaths iby cause shows that almost half were due to heart disease. It is significant to note that such preventable diseases as pneumoconioses caused 27 deaths or 32% of the total. In addition there were two deaths froib berylliosis

LIMITATIONS
Compensation Act are required under Section 6407 of the Labor Code to report to! the Siate

Department of Industrial Relations all occupational injuries which cause absence from work
beyond the day of injury. The Division of Labor Statistics and Research of the: Department
of Industrial Relations prepares statistics and reports on injuries due to industrial aooidents, In ac
cordance with an interagency agreement, the Bureau of Adult Health of the Department of Public Health
views and analyzes the occupational disease reports.
The use of these reports is a valuable aid in evaluating' the occupational health problem
in the State, and in determining which areas and whioh industries have the greatest need for preventive
health services. However, the reporting system is limited by the facts that (1) The California Workmcn's
Compensation Act does not cover maritime workers, federal employees, railroad workers in interstate c
scree, and workers employed by farmers who elect not to be covered. (2) Only a first report is ;now re
quirea and this covers only the preliminary findings made by the physician and does not in all ejases re
fleet the final diagnosis. Also the report gives only the estimated amount of lost time, resulting ir
some inaccuracy as to the length of disability.
