Bucknell B3NB Plasticizers and The Environment A paper on Plasticizer Technology, Markets and Uses was prepared for presentation at a meeting on Phthalate Acid Esters sponsor ed by the National Institute of Environmental Sciences. This meeting, to be held on September 6-7, brings together industrial, academic, medical and governmental scientists to discuss the potential environmental problems and possible health hazards pro duced by phthalate esters. The invitation to participate in this meeting came by virtue of my bieng Chairman of the MCA Ad Hoc Committee on Phthalates. In addition to the above presentation, other toxicological, environ mental and industrial hygiene data will be presented by this MCA group. Santicizer 334F No activity on S-334F in August. All medical and food surface customers are awaiting the official position of the FDA and other governmental agencies relative to phthalate esters. It is ex pected that the above mentioned NIEHS meeting will clarify the future posture of these regulatory agencies. It is anticipated that a movement toward S-334F will result from the presentation of some of the damaging data on DOP in these specific uses. Santicizer 79TM S-79TM S-321 (S-79TM/DUP) Sales 6,830 38,050 44,880 At long last, Waterbury Products became a bulk customer for S-79TM blend, S-321. Bucknell B3NB Sales 610 Budget 41,000 Santicizer 334F Clopay, Inc. has approved S-334F for a new use -- operating room drape film. Their formulation has passed both toxicolo gical and anti-static tests. Clopay plans to begin production of the film in August. They anticipate using 80 M lbs./year S-334F for one customer alone. The relatively high aqueous sensitivity of S-334F was encoun tered again at Abbott Laboratories where their studies have emphasized its use in intravenous solutions bags. This problem is serious inasmuch as most intravenous systems are expected to accommodate both blood and H2O based solutions. The cause of this high H2O sensitivity (monomeric glycol-fatty acid ester) has been isolated. Distillation will eliminate the contaminant and provide a product of much improved performance. Research must evaluate the feasibility of possible process changes in cluding post distillation and delayed addition of fatty acid terminator to solve this problem. Meanwhile, interest in S-334F continues -- new customer evalu ations have been started. This includes C. R. Bard, B. F. Goodrich and Mayon Plastics. Plasticizers and The Environment The MCA Ad Hoc Planning Committee have completed their report. It will be circulated for general membership approval in August. The report concludes that the higher phthalate ester homologs are safe when administered orally. The plans call for more work to clarify the effects of phthalates when injected, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Bucknell -2- August 4, 1972 We will participate in a symposium sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Services in September. This meeting is designed to bring together all of the pertinent toxicological, environmental and end-use data. The NIEHS will assess the hazards of phthalate usage and recommend further action in the form of research grants. Our role at this meet ing is to give historical background on the use of phthalates, clarify performance parameters and provide information necessary to estimate the chances of environmental contamination relative to specific end-uses. Sales 5,400 Budget 146,000 Santicizer 79TM General Cable and Essex Wire have trialed Santicizer 79TM in 105 UL wire formulations. This leaves General Electric as the only target account not to have looked at the product. Carol Cable finally purchased S-79TM in drum quantities. They plan to purchase 40,000 pounds in August. Waterbury also has ordered ten drums of S-321 (S-79TM/DUP) with the promise of a bulk order in August. Firestone is evaluating S-79TM/DUP for 105 THHN insulation. Sales 6,345 Budget 6,000 Santoset I W. R. Grace proceeds with their plans to purchase Santoset I in bulk. Manufacturing indicates they can make bulk shipments if sufficient lead time is given.
